A trial of a U.K.-developed coronavirus vaccine has found that it is safe and induces an immune reaction, according to preliminary results.

The research, published in the Lancet medical journal on Monday, shows that a Phase 1/2 trial of more than 1,000 healthy adults found that the vaccine induced strong immune responses up to Day 56 of the ongoing trial.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, World Health Organization (WHO) emergencies programme executive director Michael Ryan called it “good news,” but added that there is “a long way to go.”

“It is good to see more data and more products moving into this very important phase of vaccine discovery,” Ryan said.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that “the most important element” for fair distribution once a COVID-19 vaccine is developed will be “global political commitment.”

He added that the advantage of vaccine access is that the world “can lift itself out of the pandemic together,” which could speed up economic recovery.
