Florida added 4,423 coronavirus cases Wednesday, as the weekly case average increased for the fifth consecutive day.

Since March, 821,123 coronavirus infections have been recorded across Florida. The state is averaging about 4,385 infections per day, according to data from the Florida Department of Health.

Florida also announced 32 more coronavirus-related deaths Wednesday, bringing the total number dead from the virus to 17,131 people. The weekly death average decreased to about 51 people announced dead per day.

Hospitalizations: About 2,475 people across Florida are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus which has increased from previous weeks, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 530 people are hospitalized in the Tampa Bay area.

Statewide, about 25 percent of hospital beds and intensive care unit beds were available. In Tampa Bay, about 22 percent of hospital beds and 23 percent of ICU beds were available.

Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 6 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University and the Florida Department of Health.

When positivity is too high, it can indicate there isn’t enough widespread testing to capture mild and asymptomatic cases. In the spring, the World Health Organization set a recommendation for a 5 percent positivity rate or below.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 738 coronavirus cases and seven deaths Wednesday.

Hillsborough County had five deaths, and Pasco and Pinellas counties both had one. Manatee, Citrus, Polk and Hernando counties reported no new deaths Wednesday.

Citrus leads the area with the highest average weekly positivity rate at 8 percent, followed by Hillsborough, Manatee and Pasco at 7 percent, Polk at 6 percent and Hernando and Pinellas at 5 percent.

On Tuesday, the state announced it canceled a contract with a company that offered rapid coronavirus tests at a number of testing sites across the state, including Tropicana Field. The Pinellas County site had only just begun offering rapid testing. It is suspended until the state finds another vendor.

PCR tests, the more accurate testing method, is still offered. The county has picked a new rapid testing laboratory and expects the break in operations to be short.

As of the latest counts, Hillsborough has 49,376 cases and 832 deaths; Pinellas has 26,679 cases and 833 deaths; Polk has 23,612 cases and 635 deaths; Manatee has 13,842 cases and 332 deaths; Pasco has 11,328 cases and 246 deaths; Hernando has 3,869 cases and 178 deaths; and Citrus has 3,369 cases and 137 deaths.
