An incredible nearly 50% leap in new cases of COVID-19 has for the second day in a row obliterated the record in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health reports 9,914 new cases this morning, breaking the record set Saturday of 6,757. The West Piedmont Health District contributed 117 new cases to the record total. That’s actually lower than Saturday’s 132 and well short of the single-day mark of 151 set two weeks ago. There were no new deaths reported, but the district added 4 more people to be hospitalized. Henry County reported 45 new cases and 1 of the hospitalizations, and Franklin County had 40 cases and the other 3 hospitalizations. Martinsville had 19 new cases, and Patrick County had 13. There were no new cases added to the 89 reported in the outbreak at Mulberry Creek Nursing & Rehab in Martinsville. Since the pandemic began, the district has record 8,438 cases, with 148 deaths and 519 hospitalizations. There have been more than 100,000 Covid-19 hospitalizations in the US for the last 46 consecutive days…..Another 25 tennis players were forced into quarantine in Australia ahead of the season’s first tennis major after another positive coronavirus test on a charter flight, taking the total number of competitors isolating in hotel rooms to 72 on Sunday….West Virginia has emerged as an unlikely success in the nation’s otherwise chaotic vaccine rollout, largely because of the state’s decision to reject a federal partnership with CVS and Walgreens and instead enlist mom-and-pop pharmacies to vaccinate residents against the virus that has killed over 395,000 Americans….The Virginia Department of Health reports this morning there have been 439,305 cases and 5,729 deaths statewide — up by 23 since Saturday. Some 19,913 people have been hospitalized. Henry County has had 3,330 cases, with 242 hospitalizations and 64 deaths. Martinsville has had 1,220 cases, with 107 hospitalizations and 28 deaths. Patrick County has had 936 cases including 75 hospitalizations and 28 deaths. Franklin County has had 2,942 cases, 95 hospitalizations and 28 deaths. Danville has reported 3,147 cases (63 deaths), and Pittsylvania County has had 3,594 (41 deaths). Johns Hopkins University’s real-time map showed 94,602,582 cases worldwide and 2,024,168 deaths. In the U.S. there have been 23,760,523 cases and 395,855 deaths because of COVID-19.
